I need to select all polygons whose object data contains an identical attribute(?). It's forest map, I want to select all polygons of a certain vegetative cover type in order to hatch them. There many different cover types, all on the same layer.

Help! Please

One way of doing this is to open a blank drawing and attache your drawing containing the info. Then run a query, looking for that information.

If your running 2005, you might what to check out the display manager. This is a nice tool for generating nice maps.

Another way to do it, but it's kind of messy (since I deal with this problem a lot)
when you import the shape file into Autodesk Map, there is an option "drawing layer" within the dialog box that appears. Next to the "drawing layer" option, there is an option that gives you choices for what layer you would like to import the contents of the shape file to. The last toggle is "use data field for layer name" with a pull-down menu allowing you to chose what ID KEY you would like you to use for naming conventions, hence giving each unique key its own layer.

Hope that helps, best I can do without recommending ESRI

To answer your question...
Open a new drawing and attach the drawing with the polygons for querying.
Define a new query
Select by Data.
Enter the specific data you are wanting to query.
Execute your query and that should do it.

If you do it as I noted in my last post, you can selected each "coverage type" to be on it's own layer. It's something I do *almost* on a daily basis, being I work in AutoDesk Map & ESRI ArcGIS every day. Feel free to ask some more questions if you don't understand the way I explained it; I am more then willing to help you out.

WOW! Tlewald you are my hero! Thanks for that tip, it was just what I needed. Hadn't even messed with the "drawing layer to import to" function of the dialog box, other than to rename a layer! That did the trick! Thank you so much for the help!

Thanks also, gpope and sdaniel.346, for your suggestions. I had been trying to do it the way you both suggested, and kept getting a message telling me something like, "there are no tables matching that description" even though I made sure to import object data tables. But tlewald's suggestion accomplished my goal.

And thanks, also, tlewald for the offer of more help. I'm sure I'll run into more hitches as time goes on. I have only recently begun importing ESRI data into AutoCAD and I'm sure I'll run into more problems in the future. Seems that most people who do GIS use ESRI, none of the CAD folks I know ever import ESRI data into AutoCAD.

Thanks again!

No problem for the help - anytime.

Yes, it is true that most GIS users stick with ESRI, although the true power is using a combination of Map and ArcGIS.

I can't BEGIN to tell you how much more you can do over the strictly Map user or strictly ArcGIS user.

Feel free to contact me if you run into more trouble, I'll be more then willing to help out (provided my workload at the time is not overbearing).
