View Full Version : BENT BEAM-COLUMN

I created a column from a HSS8x2x3/16 material that then bent 90 degrees to form the shade structure beam (mitered 45 degrees at joint).
Here's the weird part. In order to have model look correct I used cut geometry for both the column and the beam along a 45 degree reference plane I created. Prior to doing this the beam in plan view looked fine in course mode (thick line like it should). Once I cut it along the ref. plane, the line representing the beam disappeared. I could still pick it but it would not show up in the plan view.
Is this a bug or am I missing something here.
Please see attached image.
Thank you.

Did your usage change on the beam perhaps?

Otherwise maybe raising the cut plane above the member.

Can you cut down the file and post it, then maybe someone can tell what is doing it, visibility issues can be extremely varied.

Kathy,
I tried a few things you suggested but it did not change anything.
So I deleted the horiz. beam element and redrew it. Cut the geometry as before and now the beam shows up. I can't explain it. Very strange.
Thanks for trying to help me though!
Keith

I've noticed that the steel members can be rather quirky.

I suggest a couple of things.
Firstly, try the linework tool, select 0.35pen (or 0.5 whatever you are using)
and click your beam hopefully this will over ride it and show the line.

If that doesn't work..

I'm not sure why you decided to model it as an integrated beam/column and I think this will be part of your problem as to why its not showing properly.
I would suggest modelling a beam and column seperately, and you should be able to mitre them to each other without too much hassle

I actually did model them separately. I placed the column first then the beam. I wanted to achieve the bent one-piece look per my attached image so I placed a ref. plane to cut geometry to have them mitered 45 degrees at the conn. point.
Are you saying I can achieve the same results using a different method?
How would I do that?
Thanks for your input.
