Stair Stringer cleanup

Can't manage to get this landing condition to clean up. The stringer is defined as part of the railing but it needs to be two separate railing objects because the height is different at the landing than on the stair run. Is there a way to get this to clean up properly without the dreaded "in-place family"?

Make the railing sketch for the stringer extend down and around the landing. That should make it clean up perfectly.

It does clean up when I do that but the stringer at the landing is then at the wrong height. Thee are two different heights required due to the position of the stringer relative to the treads.
