take a group families outside of a project, so they live outside the project in the .rfa format
i am NOT / i do not mean translating (export) them to dwg/dxf
all i could do now is to edit each individual family and do a save as!
Wall Types, Floor Types, Filled Region Types, Wall sweeps, etc. can be transfered to a project via "Transfer Project Standards".
But, this is not what your after!
Is there a macro-ish ability in Revit?
Or
A program that could extract externally from a Revit file?
Just trying to stimulate the thought process.

all the families that was built outside of the project
i.e all the furniture, appliances, lighting...items under "family"....i am NOT going after the system families
what had happen was someone deleted all the custom built families which sits in a folder somewhere, and now they like to extract them back out
Has this "someone" suffered an unfortunate accident yet?
Don't forget to check the subscription center. Maybe something popped up recently.
Good Luck!

There is no way to do this all at once.
You can access all the families from the project browser to save the trouble of hunting them down in the project. Right click on the family and save from there but it has to be done one at a time.
This will not work for in-place families.
