Hi there
This is a follow-on from my thread in the Revit Rendering forum.
This is the entry and dining area of a WIP.
These are 100% Revit and Accurender, no tweaking, no post-processing, nada....straight out of the radiosity and raytrace. Hope ya like them.

Nice work Marty, as usual.
The artwork decals have turned out well too !

marty...excellent, but how do you do spotlights like that, I cant for the life of me work out haow to angle spotlights in Revit/Accurender. Please help me out and explain (or even better, upload the light family!)
Great work Marty, artwork excellent and so is the lighting. Q though . . . the zigzagging of the shadows from the horzontal screen rails? Is there an explanation?

Multiple lights casting their own shadows will cause the zig-zag effect.

Thanks for the positive comments guys.
Alex, the lights are simply made from the generic spotlight family template. Understanding how they perform is a bit of trial and error, but quite easy to make.
Scott, thanks for confirming the zig-zag thing. Oh, and the coffe mugs originally came from Accustudio, spotted them last night.
Yeah Beegee, I love decals.

So the spotlights arent directional?

Hi Alex,
The spot lights in the above renderings havent been tilted, but can be. I just used the beam spread.
You need to make a spotlight out of the 'Metric Spotlight Fixture Ceiling Based' family template which has attributes such as 'Spot beam angle', Spot spread angle', and 'Spot tilt angle'. These attributes can also be accessed via the Properties/Edit dialogue from a vertical downlight made from the above template.
Hope this helps
(how's Wellington by the way? Wet 'n' windy)

Thanks for your reply, Ill give that a go this weekend. Have tried before but unsuccessful...cant remember why.
The whole country has been wet and windy, not just wellington.
Of course, we blame it on Australians hogging all the good weather! Next time you see a Aussie weather map, note that because of your drought based weather, the lows coming up from Antartica hit this huge High and get pushed off to the right, buffeting our poor little island with wind and a diluge of water....on a good note though, when Australia runs out of water in the near future, feel free to immigrate, we need some Revit people!
Alex, maybe there is a great export there for NZ - especially when our drinking water starts to have a much greater (real) value than that of gold or nickel or the price of News Corp etc! in great scheme of things.
Four Corners (weekly c/a documentary for the un-initiated) last night dealt with the water issue - extremely alarming - Sydney has 90+ weeks of water in the reservoirs and Perth has about 120 weeks and the rest in between - with summer started and the rainfall down across the country 20% on last year, we are heading for trouble and looking for solutions to issues that the pollies cannot talk their way out of!! :-(
Appologies - that is way off the topic and way "Out There"!!

Hi,
Very nicely done! My question is this. You have managed to make your decals 3 dimensional and have them standing off the wall a bit. How did you manage this nice trick?
(Mine tend to be very flat and sit on the wall without casting shadows.)
Thanks in advance,
Steve Shell

I am guessing that decals are not placed directly on walls. Instead decals are probably placed on instances of 3d picture-frame family.

Precisely Leonid,
Steve, the canvases are simply a 'generic model wall based' family. Position them on the wall, size them, and stick the decal on.

Thanks!
Sometimes it's the easy things that elude me. (Very Blonde Architect here...lol)

hi there marty.
very nice. did you create the lights to be proud off the ceiling? wish we had more time in the office to play on revit. i made a light with a lamp to give the effect that the light is on, but i get these weird shadows between lights in the ceiling. will have a play with it on the weekend.

Hi Toby,
The spot light template has the light source below the ceiling level, which can be adjusted to suit when the fitting model is made from the template. It is important to keep the source away from the ceiling level or else you end up with all sorts of wacky effects such as stripey reflections and facetted edges where the light lands on a surface.
Hope this helps.

The only thing I find strange is that the light does not seem to be coming from the fixture...it's just sort of there. Is this normal?

i made the light with a material that appears to be a lamp that gives off light, but as you can see, the one on the right is turned off but still seems to be on. this scene only took me 5 min to set up, as you can see with the beautifully tiles, but the rest worked OK. the only thing is the reflection of the lights on the ceiling. i suppose the light source is to close to the ceiling.
will explore later.

Tobie,
The big black splat on the ceiling is what is commonly known as a shadow leak. This is caused when objects are not joined. Try using the join geometry tool on the fitting and ceiling, or look at how you have made the light body and lamp material and where they are located in relation to the ceiling, and how they cut the ceiling.
Greg,
I have found that if you raytrace using 'recalc radiosity lights' checked, a defined edge is cast where the light beam hits the wall surface. I guess it all depends whether you want a hard edge or a soft glow. It is nice having the option.
CheersM.

I was just referring to the fact that if you look just at the fixture and eliminate the rest of the image, it does not appear that the light is actually "on", but it clearly is because it is casting light on the wall. I was just curious if this has anything to do with the family and setting luminescence to the fixture material or if it is a bug or what...I never noticed that before...

those look awsome, but I have one question . how did you make the lights cast a soft shadow down the wall. (What rendering setting caused it). When I render the revit default. my lights cast a sharp light projection down the wall. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance for the help

Sorry,
New to this forum and I have to ask an silly question. How do I view the images? If I go to the Gallery Portal Page, it just goes thru a loop.

Images are posted as thumbnails on the message itself. Normally, you simply select the image and you can see the larger posted image from the thumbnail. Check your security settings on the IE, Netscape, Mozilla etc. You have to lower the security settings to allow for the thumbnails to show.
