View Full Version : In-Place Structural Framing Family - Cut?

Hi All -

Working on a theatre with complex structural raker beams that I created as in-place families to deal with theatre geometry - see the attached plan and section. The rakers are showing their entire depth at higher level plans, such as Level 3. I need to see the portion of the raker at Level 3 (where it crosses a floor opening), but don't want to see the portion of the raker down at Level 1.

It's not a view range issue; I think it has to do with how the family is cuttable and what's viewed when it has been cut. I've tried changing the family category to something like Generic Models, and it won't let me, saying "Can't change category of Family Instance."

I'd prefer to keep the raker modelled as on extrusion on all floors (ie not split apart Level 1), and don't want to do a masking region. Any help would be most appreciated.

Cheers,
Pete Wilson

Just came across this, and I was having a similar issue, but with a modeled in place family. We have some existing trusses throughout our space and I had modeled them in place as a structural framing family. I wanted to convert them to generic models so that I could create walls along the slope of the truss with the wall by face tool.

Rather than try to change the family category (where I got this error "Can't change category of Family Instance"), I edited the family, copied the extrusions, and then created a new model in place family, set it as a generic model and pasted in place.
