Hi
I am starting to work on a duplex and started thinking of ways to only make one side and then mirror the other side. In a perfect world it would be as simple as making it once mirror and done. But we all know that after I mirror it i will have changes and I would like to only make the changes on one side and be automatic on the other side. My first thought was to only build one side then link it to another project. Once its a link in another project I mirror it using the Mirror Project tool. I discovered that I couldnt link the mirrored project to the original project becuase the Link file name is the same name as the host project name. So i opened a new project and linked both sides into the new project, which works but i cannot tag and there are no schedules. I then tried to copy/monitor (which i rarely use), then i had schedules and tags but the walls do not clean up nicely in the corners. I would be satisfied if i can link the mirrored project into the original project that way i can tag and have at least the schedule for one side of the duplex without having to copy/monitor. Im wondering if anyone has any experience with a similar project. I'm also wondering if im way over my head here and I'm expecting too much.

Well you could always try creating a group and getting then placing it on the otherside. And then try just mirroring the walls.

Yes, it sounds like a group might be your best bet. However, one point of caution... I've found that sometimes, In-Place families within a mirrored group do not behave properly. Still haven't gotten to the bottom of why, but they seem to move around in an unexpected manner.

Hi Saeborne,

I did one recently, where a client bought the adjacent alotment and wanted to build two houses, one the mirror of the other. The CD's were pretty well complete when I did the mirror and I must say it was surprisingly good.

If I remember correctly, it took 1 1/2 - 2 hrs to clean everything up and except for a few families (mostly wall based) everything worked as it should.

Good luck with it.

FMUN, your original strategy of linking it in twice (once mirrored) will work fine.

You dont even have to copy monitor. You do your tagging and annotating IN the linked file. Look up "By Linked View" and it will explain how it all works...

Thanks everyone, these are some great ideas.

I dont really like the way groups work most of the time so I try not to use them. But i have not ruled them out as one of my options here so i will play around with it see how that works.

twiceroadsfool: thanks for that recommendation, I rarely link my projects so i didnt know of the visibility options available. Its great, I am now thinking of ways those options can help me in others projects.
