Does anyone know if you can change the backup location of a non-workshared project?

No, you can't. It will always be saved in the same path as your main Revit file.
Any reason why you would like to do it?

so a user doesn't accidently open and start working on a ".001.rvt" file thinking it is the actual file? it's happened......

Good question...
We are setting up some filing standards and wanted to / were hoping that, the Revit file could reside in a folder on its own. Part of the reason is so the backups don't get opened up by accident and the other reason is just to make it as clear as possible for all users what file is the most current. Obviously this isn't an issue with central files...
I also wanted to ask just to make sure I wasn't missing something... The help menu is pretty clear on this topic. Thanks for the replies...
