View Full Version : What do you host your families to?

We just had a issue with the architect deleting their Ceiling Grid and putting in a new one. We informed them that doing that would make our lights become orphans, but the damage was done.
We have another project coming up in a few weeks (number 2) and I was wondering what the proper practice was for hosting families.
Are we to let the architect know before hand not to delete ceilings/walls but to move it instead and host our families to them.
Or should we create our own levels and just host to that and then move it up and down according to where the arch. puts there ceiling?
We are just wanting to see what yall are doing with what Revit is capable of right now. Thanks for the input!

I host to the faces of the ceilings in the architectural link.
We have tried many approaches to try to get architects to move ceilings and walls instead of deleting them, however they still do it on a regular basis. It seems to be one of those things you just have to deal with for now.

Is there a quick fix for them deleting there stuff and us putting it back? Or do you have go to each family and rehost it to the new wall/ceiling?
By the way mjdanowski, is your picture from Lord of the Rings? The symbol on the door of the mines of moria?

You just described EXACTLY why I have given Revit M 'e' P the finger.
The Revtards kept on saying 'But... But... it magically adjusts your stuff when the architectural models gets updated'.
Fact is - I don't want ANYTHING happening 'automatically'. I want to open my drawing and see my stuff sitting where I left it. I can make the necessary adjustments myself, and then I know to be on the lookout for the architect changing stuff and not bothering to tell me.
ACAD UBER ALLES!!!

But if the industry is heading in the Revit/BIM direction, won't you be at a disadvantage when Autocad isn't being used anymore and you have to adapt to Revit? I mean if you start using Revit now, even with all the problems, you will have a better understanding of it when that time comes.

Same here, hosting family is like asking Architect to destroy your families.
Unhosted or if you must use a host, use reference plane.

We host to a reference plane, with that option then you maintain positive control over your objects in your model, if the Architect deletes a ceiling, all you have to do is re-align the reference plane to the new ceiling elevation and all the elements in the ceiling go at once. It takes a little more time to set-up the reference plane but in the long run it saves a lot of headache.
