Split Face In Place Family

I am trying to split the face of an in-place floor family (for tiling) created over the floor slab, partly setdown into the slab. I cannot split the face of the floor family to create a recessed drain along a wall.

When I try to select the family, it only highlights the floor face, and not the family. No amount of tabbing works.

Is this not possible?

As far i'm aware no. The split face and paint tool are disabled in family edit mode and can't be edited afterwards. Best bet is to make them two seperate elements...
