Is it possible to create new family categories? I want to create a category of accessories so that I can have a seperate schedule of those accessories. Any pointers will be greatly appreciated.

No you cannot create new catagories of families. Your best bet is to utilize one of the built-in parameters that exist in all families, such as Type Comments, or Description. If you then add this parameter to your schedules, you can then hide the column for this parameter, but still use it to filter what is in the schedule by filtering on this parameter.

I had a bit of an issue with my shcedule filtering too, and was using the inbuilt filters, but it went too complex on the last job, so am now in the process of adding a shared parameter specifically to filter my schedules.
If your accessories have a type mark, mark or something, you can filter, and if there is something identiying in the name/type etc that isn't used in other objects, that can also be used as a filter.
