Below is one of the default revit receptacles which I have edited with hatch to read as an emergency one. When I load this file, I am given two versions in the project: a standard receptacle and a GFCI version.

I would really like to understand the functionality behind this...how is revit deriving 2 versions of the receptacle from 1 family file?

When you open the family in the family editor, click the "Family Types" button from the design bar. In the family types dialogue, there are options for creating multiple types. When you load the family into a project, all the pre-definmed types are loaded by default.

This is basically the same as selecting a component in a project, opening the element properties>edit/new>duplicate. When you do this, you are creating a type that does not already exist within the family itself.

Much thanks to you! This has had me baffled all day. I had a feeling it was something simple I had just overlooked :)
