Is there a way to get a take-off of the structural steel tonage in a Revit Structure model?
Ideally it would be broken down by member type and size with a total tonage for that size and then summed up for a total tonage of steel at the bottom.
Thanks.
BTW - I've played around with the Material Take-off view a little bit but the best I can come up with is a list of member lengths, so then I still need to do the math for the tonage myself.
What I did was go into the steel families, columns and framing, and make the weight/linear foot parameter "w" a shared parameter. This way I could add to a schedule in the project. Then in the schedule I set up a calculated value the takes the length * W/2000.

Normally I schedule the material volume. Then add a calculated value to multiply the material volume by the density (manually entered). Unfortunately the quantity has to be a volume, which you can then change the field format of so it dosn't display the units.

Thanks, Paul, that worked. Although it's kind of bizzare that Revit requires this kind of "work around" to get it. Tonage seems like it would be a rather simple thing to put directly in the schedule.

Any chace of getting an explanation as to where/how I would go about doing that?
Thanks.

Hi Matt -
just do a search of this forum for "weight" or "tonnage" or the like. This question is very common and gets asked every month or so......
**Autodesk - how many times does this need to come up before we get an in-built parameter
shipped with the families??**

1. Open the beam family, under the "Family Types" dialog box go to the "w" parameter, and click modify. Click on the shared parameter button, and click select. Then browse to shared parameter file, where you can add a parameter called "w". If don't have a shared parameter file you can create one, and then create the parameter. You do this on all the steel families that you want to schedule.
2. Next load the families into the project.
3. The create a schedule, and add length and the "w" to the schedule. Then click on calculated values. Set up your calculated value to look something like so
"((Length / 1') * W) / 2000". This will give you calcutated value as a number.
Hope that helps

Refer to THIS BLOG POST (http://connected.typepad.com/connected/2008/08/configure-revit.html) for more information. Yes it is quite odd that Revit isn't configured to do this out of the box, always puzzled me too.

I found it odd that in the blog post they added a second parameter called "WtperFoot". This seems like it just adds more work, because you will either have to go back and edit the type catalog to input this information, or you could set up a formula. I found it easier since the OTB Revit families already had a parameter for this, to just make a shared parameter.
