any way yet to split text - like sheet notes; specifications - into columns similar to what you can do with schedules?

No, you can do this only the stupid way.... You have a text of 100 rows, single column.. and you want three columns...
You copy the text 2 times besides the initial , you narrow the columns as you want them and you delete the text in a way that the three columns make the total text...

Create a schedule.
Do This: create a new schedule, in the category select Mass and choose "schedule key" and set the name something like "General Notes". Then add a "note" parameter for the text and sort by "key name". Add new lines for new text. In the format tab justified the text as you want.

You can paste paragraph information in this schedule. Create a new "hidden line" for the grid lines, so the schedules lines will be invisibles.

Now you can divide your text just like any schedule.

I use schedules for notes too. Not the perfect solution because you can't see multi line text in the schedule editor.
In the appearance tab you can control the grid lines. I don't think you need to bother with hidden lines.
Revit 2010 - Improved text editor??? Nope....Ribbon......

We have done something similar....Scheduling my General notes, so I could split them and they behave like schedules.
1. Create a "Drafting View and Place the "General Notes" in it....
2. Copy it however may times you want and number it.
3. From View/New....create a new "Note Block" then Select "General Notes" from there.
4. Your General Note Schedule should be created automatically
5. Place the Schedule in your sheet.....
6. DO NOT PLACE that drafting view in the sheet, it is just a placeholder for the note instances

Good Luck
