Hey all,

To start off, I'm new to Revit. I am familiar with Sketchup, Cad and FormZ, but Revit is giving me a problem.
Anyway, I have created a customized column in Sketchup and I would like to import it as a massing in Revit. How do I convert it into an actual column in Revit? I tried assigning walls and roofs but it's not working too well. I want the whole massing to be in Aluminum.

I don't know if my question is making sense, but hopefully someone can help me.

I have attached a jpg of said column.

Also wanted to add the whole model pic I have previously built in FormZ so you guys can get the idea (hopefully).

File > New Family > Select "Structural Column" as your Template File > Import your SketchUp file__File > Import/Link > CAD Formats > Select your .skp column file.

Now attempt to recreate the mass, in Revit, by using Solid Forms. Once you've re-created the mass, select the solid forms and navigate to their Properties (Select,right-click, Element Properties) Here you will be able to either assign a Material or a Material Parameter (ALUM.) to the Solid Forms.

Once you are satisfied with your family, load the family into your project (Load into Project @ Family Editor)

Hope this helps.

wow, reminds me of a formZ model I built in my 2nd year of architecture school way back around 1999. It was a small research lab/apartment built onto an existing waterway dam, with angled structure like you showed there.

Thanks for the quick response.
I have tried recreating the mass in Revit but I suck at modelling in Revit. The controls are a lot different than Sketchup or FormZ. In any way, I will attempt to do this and I'll let you know how it goes.

Good things come to those who wait---

In mid-April, Revit 2010 will offer some new, more "sketch-up" like modelling
tools for Massing that you will find much easier to use................................

Okay,

I managed to make create the massing in Revit (wooohoo) by manipulating the reference planes and doing blends. I also managed to assign the materials.

I don't know how to load the Family I created into a project. Do I save the 'new' column that I made first? I tried loading it into an open project but for some reason I cannot find it. It doesn't show up at all.

Hallelujiah I got it.

Thank you very much Revitcomponents. I'm sure I will run into more problems but hopefully I get better at this.

YES__

Save the Structural Column Family > Select the "Load into Project" button at the bottom of the Family Editor left toolbar >

Once in your project file, select Structural Column from the "Structural" Design Bar (if the Structural Bar is not showing either right-click and select in the far left toolbar or select at Window > Design Bars... > check Structural)

Click 'Structural Column' and VIOLA

:)
