I joists not showing

What would cause I joists to not show in plan view or section, but appear in 3d view. Using Revit 2009. Joists are checked to show in object styles and visbility graphics in view properties. I had issues before with I joists not showing in sectioins and was told the family may need to be manipulated to display in section views. Never got into that, but they always showed in plan views till now.

I believe this is caused by your view settings. If you are in a plan view, are you trying to see joists located below the current level's floor or joists above current level's ceiling? It may simply be that something is hiding the joists. Also, your top and bottom of view range may not reach to the joists. If those settings are correct, try changing to different levels of detail.

They might also only display a single line of your level of detail is at coarse.
