I have structural columns which will be built into walls. When I join the columns with the walls, the column dissapears within the wall, which I dont want, I want to be able to see the column. When I dont join them it looks like Picture 1. The only why I found to show it the way I want it, is to create a in-place wall cut family to cut the wall at the position of the column as per Picture 2. Is there an easier way to do this?

I don't think you're using a structural column (from the structural tab on the design bar). What you're describing is what we'd expect to see from an architectural column (think column cover/pilaster).

If this is something like a concrete column, then load and place a structural concrete column family. It will cut the wall when you join geometry and should get you exactly what you need.

modify the default structural concrete columns this way
edit family/settings/category parameters/ swich the "cut back in plan" parameter value from bounding box to geometry.
no more problems when joining.

Check if you are using Structural Columns and not Columns found in Modelling Tab. (See image attached)

The columns I use is defenitly structural. I've loaded some other column to test them and see how they would react, and the same happens. I've copied the column and wall to a new project, and in there it work 100%. Is it maybe a setting somewhere in the original project I should change?

Try using a masking region (found in the drafting tab.)

I will use that as a last resort as the project has about 500 columns in it. So it will be very time consuming to do it for each column over 3 floors.

I've tested it with steel and timber columns, and they work fine, its just the concrete structural columns that doesnt want to display correctly. Is it possibly a graphics error somewhere?

Can you upload a sample rvt file (purged if possible)?

I've deteled out all the problem columns, purged the file of the loaded columns and reloaded new structural column. Seems to be working fine now. Thanks
