As shown, the totoal dimension is 20, while the sum of the three sub-dimensions is 20' 1/8". What's wrong here?

Check the units format in the type properties of your dimension family. Revit is rounding the dimension. We keep all of our dimensions at 1/256" to avoid this problem.

even better (and a lesson from the days past) don't close your dimension strings

when the contractor is off in his construction (based on allowable tolerances outlined in the specs) where does he make up the difference if all strings are closed? if one is open (and you get to choose) he knows where he can go to get back on track

You can close them, you just have to add a suffix of the +/- in one of the dimension strings to let the contractor know where the "tolerance" needs to occur. There are portions of our designs, where it would be preferable for the adjustment to be made in one location, rather than another.

Good point. Achieves the same thing and gives you a bit more to boot. I like it!
