View Full Version : Can't copy/paste or even place a detail group

In order to avoid not having to show a linked CAD file for owner-supplied equipment, I tried just drawing some simple boxes with detail lines, and then grouping those together for different pieces of equipment. Then I grouped those groups together to make the entire owner equipment layout.
I copy/paste aligned this overall group to another floor plan with no problems.
Now I'm trying to copy/paste it to a 3rd version of the floor plan, but it will not paste at all. In fact, in this particular floor plan, I can't even place a detail group at all. When I click the Detail Group button, nothing happens. I can drag/drop an equipment detail group from the project browser into the floor plan, but I cannot drag the overall layout group (with the nested groups) into the floor plan.
What is going on here?

Dependent View? Design Option? Workset turned off?
Does that Group already exist in the view, and is it "hiding"?
Try duplicating the Group and renaming it?
Try ungrouping the lines, copy into a family template, then load the family into the project.
any of these things helping?
cheers..................

There are no dependent view, no design options, and no worksharing in this file.
It just seemed odd that the Detail Group button wouldn't even work at all in that view.
I duplicated and re-named the overall detail group, and that seemed to work, which was good because I had to make a different type anyway. Then after that I was able to place the original overall group just fine. Weird...

When you make a detail group of detail lines, it is effective set for a given direction of view. Meaning that a detail group made in a plan view ( and placing, or leaving one in that type of view) effectively makes is a plan view. When you duplicated the group, that duplicated group had NOT been placed in a plan view, so could be placed in another type of view.
