dimension without line

is there a way of creating a dimension style showing only two arrow heads and text (hiding the line)

I don't think there is, since dimension is a system family.

You could get the same effect with some manual override.
Place your dimension, position the dimension text directly over the dimension string, click on the text (brings up text override), and use spaces in the prefix and suffix boxes. This will expand the opaque background for as many spaces as you type into the boxes.

Terrible way to go about it, but it would work...

thats a smart workaround, it works ok for my immediate needs, but I wish there was a better way..
