Occasionally when I'm creating families or profiles and give them a name, the name gets doubles up. What causes this and how can I stop it? Thanks.

What you're seeing is "Family Name : Type Name". If you change the type name to match the family name, then you will only see the family name by itself. But if you have more than one type for a particular family, then you will see both the family name and the type name together.

Remember that if you open a family that has one or more types defined, and modify it and save it as a different family, those type names from the original family will remain. You should change the types in the new family, or remove all types except one and name it something like "Default" or give it the same name as the family name.

Add in at least one family type and name it. I add in Default as the name when there will be only one type.

Also many people forget that in all naming Family sheet and views, the category is not necessary and just pushes the rest of the name (which is what you really need to see) to the right and out of the PB.

For Instance I often see

Floor Plans: First Floor Plan
Floor Plans: Tollet 210 Enlarged Floor Plan

Doors: Single Door: Single Door 36 x 84
Windows: Casement Window XOX With Muntins 4 0 x 6 0

The last example is really bad. In 2009 with the default PB width you can see Windows: Case...

Firms need Family and Type and View naming conventions that are extensible and easy to read.

Hi Bryan

Rename the "Type" to match Exactly as the Family Name....eg

Single Door 36 x 84 : Single Door 36 x 84
