Ok, I'm pulling my hair out over this one. Several years ago, when I firstI obviously used some sort of shaft opening to cut a mechanical shaft through 4 floors but I can't find the actual shaft anymore. The holes in the floors are still there (on all 4 floors) but I can't select the shaft opening to modify it. They aren't part of the floor slabs (when I tried to edit those all I get it the perimeter of the slab, no holes). I also tried turning on all my worksets, show hidden elements, checked visibility graphics, etc. and still can't figure this out. Any suggestions?

The shaft may be in a different phase
Visibility for Openings may be off

I looked in all the phases and still can't find it. I also checked the VG to make sure openings are visible all to no avail. Unfortunately the file is over 100MB so I can't exactly share it.

Sometimes Revit just baffles me. I just got back from a meeting and now the shaft is there.

I avoid "openings" when I can for this reason... I CANNOT SEE THEM...
I am glad you found it... I was going to suggest making a big selection of everything and then go to your Filter button to isolate the shaft(s)...

I tried the select-all then filter thing and that didn't work. Sometimes Revit just has a mind of its own.

I noticed that issue in a training class. Switching to another view like 3D made it visible then. I don't know why or how.
