When installing 2010, there is a screen that asks for the serial number and product key, as well as a first and last name and organization.

Are we supposed to enter our own names as End Users, or should I enter the name of my boss - the contract manager for our company?

I entered the name of my boss when installing 2010 on my work machine yesterday. Then I went home and tried to install it on my home machine under the Home Use License Agreement. That time I tried entering my own name and the name of our company, and it said there was an error when registering. I don't know if it had anything to do with putting in my own name, or if there was just an isolated problem with registering the product and getting an activation code at the time I did it (around 9:15 p.m. CDT last night).

I used Revit for the first name, User for the last name and then the company name for the Organization. That way the information is generic.

That way every computer will have Revit User as the user name.

In the past, I've also used Computer User as the name.

I've never had an issue registering a Home User License with this naming method.

I know it's not very creative, but it works.

I always enter the name of the Contract Manager and the Company as registered in the contract details.

It's all personal or company preference, but I like to stay away from an individuals name because you never know where that person might be tomorrow.

A company that I used to work for had a name in the user information box that belonged to a person who had not worked there in over 5 years (former IT Mananger and they kept putting it in fresh with new software installs even after he was gone). When I asked, I was told "that's what we have always put in there". :banghead:

I think they were afraid that it might "break" the install or the licensing if they changed it. That's the place where I first used "Computer User" as the user name for all installs that I performed.

My .07 cents worth.

That's a good point. I'll consider next year putting in something like Computer User and the Company name when registering. I think the company name is the important part, since that is to whom the program is registered to.

i dont think technically it matters, its not like they are going to limit support (especially if subscription user) I have found that everyone / every organization seems to do it differently.

Where i work, our firm name is the last 2 names of the principles, so I just do

first name: name1
last name: name2
company: name1 name2 architects

especially since i have it set in the roll-out and dont have the end-user configure anything
