voids not showing up in family

a have some fancy reveals and recessed areas that i want to make in a family then attach to a wall in my project. i've tried creating the voids in a family but they won't cut the wall and don't show up when i place the family in my project. what's the deal?

what family template are you using?
I tried it with a generic family - wall based template and it worked just fine.

that's exactly what i'm using. the shapes just show up as 2d orange lines on the surface of my wall and don't cut out anything. what is the process of creating a void? maybe i'm just missing a step somewhere...

Did you use the "Cut Geometry" command to cut the void out of the host wall in the family editor?

found the problem...wasn't working b/c i also have an opening in the family. thank you!
