Family Type Parameter sucking in family types from within Project.
I built a nested door family. I created a series of generic "door panel" families which I catagorized as "doors" and loaded in to my "Door Frame Type 2" family. I selected the nested "door panel" family and set it to have a "Family Type" instance parameter. This way a single door frame type can have any of the 5-6 door types I made without each one needing to be a separate family (e.g., full glass, flush, half glass, etc).
That family works exactly how i want it to with one exception.
Within the project file, when I select one of these"Door Frame Type 2" families, and then go tothe instance parameter for "Door_Panel_Type" - the pull down menu is giving me not just the 5-6 nested door panels I had loaded into the Family - it is also giving me options for every door type loaded into the Project File itself (including the family into which it is to be nested thereby creating an infinite loop of nesting... )
Needless to say - if you I select any of the non "Door_Panel" options the component breaks and it wants to delete itself. But i can't figure out how to delete these unwanted options form the family. Any Clues?

OK - apparently i had accidentally checked the "Shared" box within the family. whoops... BTW - what is it there for?
Re: Family Type Parameter sucking in family types from within Project.
'Shared' enables the ability to insert and schedule nested components independently from the host.
Re: Family Type Parameter sucking in family types from within Project.
As Alfredo wrote... the reason the nested families show up in the Browser is because a "shared" family is actually added to the project database as a unique element (which means you can place them apart from their host too). When they aren't "shared" Revit displays a symbol of the nested family but does not add it to the database and it won't appear in the browser as a loaded family.

Thanks for the quick response.

IMHO you WANT them to be shared, it just needs to be very well thought out, to deal with the extraneous types.

Going off of Aaron's comments, with shared families, you don't need to dig through all of the families that you have it nested into to change them to the latest & greatest. You can drive them from your firms template or on a project level. We have a monthly posting of updated content for projects to update at their discretion.
I have built my firm's wall hosted doors this way, with guidance from AUGI pros. It's a little hard for people to understand at first, but once they ready the door guide & use it, they love how easy it is. It's amazing how a well thought out & executed family, can save so much time. We also setup our door legends in our template to standardize it firm wide. This way we can show the frames & door planes separate from each other, per our standards. The legend is also placed on our door details plot sheet, again for standardization.
Resistance is futile. You will be assimilated. Or in Binary

I hope this helps,
