Default Objects Disappearing - Bizarre Solution

We have a project in Revit 2009 that was missing most of the gridlines and dimensions in all views (sounds like they were deleted right?) So I tried changing the only gridline left from 10 to 9 (to see if they were infact deleted) and Revit told me that the gridline already existed. So, I thought that maybe the gridline was just out of the scope of the view so I wrote down the element id number in the warning dialog and went to Tools... Element Ids... Select by ID... input the number and clicked on Show. The elements and their associated dimensions magically reappeared in all the views. I'm thinking this is a rare bug (or corrupted file) but I thought I'd shared the solution with AUGI.

Also, when auditing doesn't fix bugs, upgrading to the next revit release can sometimes fix buggy behavior.

These things are worth a try the next time a problem vexes you.

What bizarre solutions have you found in exploring Revit?

    Thanks David,
I think tips like these are REALLY helpful. Bugs appear all the time - the little annoying things that are in all programmes. One can waste huge amounts of time trying to see what the f#<% is going on. Having posts on these is great!

I don't know if this has been documented before - I haven't seen it anywhere but learned it from someone.

Sometimes, in a 3D orthographic view, when you use scroll wheel to zoom in and out, your view suddenly starts to actually scroll rather than zoom.

The crude but quick solution to it is to delete this view in the browser and click again on a 3D icon to bring it back. Then the mouse's scroll wheel works correctly again (as a zoom) - at least for a while...

Occasionally the same foundations appear corrupted in all views with linestyles all messed up. Opening the relevant family for editing and re-loading it solves this little bug.

You expect families to show as they are cut in plan view, right? Wrong.
If a family is above your cut plane, just edit family, set cut plane in family where you want to see it cut in plan view (six or seven foot rather than the default five), and then draw an invisible line all the way down. Trick is that if a part of the family is visible, the entire family is visible and it will show the plan view from family rather than how it should logically be calculated. This also makes using plan regions quite redundant.

    Well, not really...

I use plan region for a totally different reason - to show two different floor levels on a single plan - like in a split level house or a mezzanine floor situation, etc.

Or, for example, to show a window that normally wouldn't show in a standard cut plane because it is positioned at non-standard height (e.g. stairwell).

That's exactly what I'm talking about. Invisible line to groundplane solves all. Atypical but in my experience true.

We've run into this on a second project on a differnet workstation. This time basment walls were disappearing. I'm wondering if this is a bug in Revit 2009 WU3. Select by ID solves the problem yet again.
