    Default Chainlink fence

Anyone know a relatively simple way to draw a 3d chainlink fence in straight AutoCAD?

    Thumbs up Re: Chainlink fence

    It should be fairly simple,
I tried it and was able to get it in about 3 minutes.
    Steps
    1) Create your 3D shape, (ideally make this a block)
    2) Once your 3D object is created then enter the array command
    3) Enter your spacing (Both Rows & Columns)
    4) Select your objects
    5) Press ok
    6) Voila

I use polyline and hatch to keep the model light.

If you're rendering, you could draw a solid thats a few inches thick the same height and length as the fence; then put a material map on it. I'm using ACA, but doesn't vanilla cad also have materials? There's a chain link fence one. It has an opacity map attached where the "holes" in the fence are black, so the render transparent.

    Michael,

That's more of a 'chain mail' fence. the wires in chainlink interweave quite differently..I do like it though..

#2 post is a terrible idea. #3 post is a much better idea! (although i'm not sure how it would render)

I don't much like the idea of #4 either. Anyone else have any suggestions? I've seen a nice chain link fence done in 3ds max but they have 3D editable splines to work with....

    KISS (keep it simple stupid)

Depends on what "nice" is. I've done lightweight panels with a simple region (we don't need individual strands showing on technical drawings), and either set as transparent or applied materials for rendering. I've done detailed panels with nested blocks that are more detailed (again, with regions) but with correspondingly larger files.

Keep in mind 3DS Max is designed to make things pretty, AutoCAD is designed to make things. Different products, different capabilities.
