    Talking BIM City Demo Reel

    Technical:
This is the most fun I've had working on a project in a while. I had to manage multiple files from different disciplines coming into 3ds MAX, setup all materials, create the animation sequences and setup a BackBurner render farm. I was able to use 19 dual core systems in one of our offices training rooms to help crank out the animation. To see all 19 of them chugging on spitting out over 1600 frames of animation was nothing short of pure joy. I would also say that getting to composite everything in after effects was a nice trip back to being creative for once in my job. If you have questions on the making of this video, please let me know!

    Steve,

Did you use distributed rendering....now that's a site to see with even 10 dual core machines.

19 dual-cores and 1600 frames? Do you remember the average frame time? Probably not much time for joy since it was done in like 10 minutes, eh?

Were you using Backburner? I keep finding glitches and bugs in BB, so I've been checking out other render management software, mostly Deadline. Haven't decided on it yet, but Deadline is cheap and does everything BB does...

I thought about DBR, but settled on backburner since I could send multiple jobs at once. It was sick though to see 40 boxes jumping around the image cleaning it up.

    Each frame averaged 30-35mins.

I didn't run into any bugs with BB. any problems I had were network or permissions related. I had those systems humming for about 3 days - 24/7 to complete it all. It may have taken a little longer due to the new algorithms in 2010 for the flickerless animation setting I chose. I've actually since revised the video and spliced in a segment towards the beginning. It just shows the city on a turntable type shot.

I've actually got something to share which I'll put in its own thread that can effectively KILL ALL render farms.

Wow, 30 minutes is a lot. Would you mind posting (a screenshot of) your render settings? What was your resolution?

What's this "flickerless" animation setting? You didn't render to frames?

    Cheers,

    Cheers,
I did render to frames. There has been issues of having flickering colors/lighting in rendered objects/cameras moving with mental ray.

I was working with a scene close to 500,000 polygons. Much of it was imported geometry from Revit. I tried to optimize the geometry as much as I could, but was limited with my time in how well I could optimize it. I wanted to render to a low HD format so that added to the render time. I may have cooked in too much fine tuning to the render settings, but again I didn't have time to do testing to see how low I could go & still get away with a good shot.

This is what I was refering to if you missed the thread.
