or is it a completly new style indpendant of the walls and doors?

I'm guessing these are some type of trim piece? If so, you could add a body modifier, but since trim in a sense is a separate piece and installed later, I'd use a structural member style. Create the profile of the trim, create a SMS with that profile and place them where you want. Later, you can anchor them to the wall. SMS's will allow you to get the miter corners as such. Just a thought, That's how I think I'd do it.
For skirtings, coving, dado, etc, I'd look at using wall sweeps.
For architrave and other mouldings around doors, windows or openings I'd add them as custom blocks to the window/door styles made out of mass elements.
