Default you now own the element....error message

My coworker is getting this error message when trying to open his local file, "You now own the element, but your file is out of date. You must reload latest before editing the element."

The problem is that this is happens while trying to open the file and does not allow him the opportunity to reload....he must click "cancel" to exit the error box which then cancels the opening of the project.

Anyone know where this error could be occuring?

what version and WU# are you using? This type of problem happen quite frequently to us on 2009 prior to WU#3.

This is a workset issue. Someone went in an modified a "borrowed" element. Now the new user owns it, but he needs to see the changes that were made by someone else. now this is in theory. I have seen multiple times where Revit claims that a user is responsible for owning an element, and that user was on vacation for a week. There really is no rhyme or reason as to how revit manages central files. They can have unpredictable behavior.
Have you tried to make a new local copy from the central?
Make sure your worksets are set up correctly and that everyone knows how to use them.

Simply make a new local copy and it will work fine. I don't know why revit does this, probably just some little bug.

yeah it's simply a real pain in the a$$...I would rather avoid this problem but if it's one of those Revit quirks then I guess we'll just have to deal with it.

I'll check the WU to see where we are...

(edit: I didn't mean to come off sounding ****** at the response, I appreciate any advice i can get in these forums (thanks much btw), just a bit frustrated with many aspects of Revit.)
