    Default Real Time Rendering....

Vray demo'ed a GPU based real time rendering system at Siggraph. It looks like it is running parrallel to 3DS in the demo. So it should be easy for them to eventually do a plug-in for Revit.

Rendering is 20x faster than a 8 core CPU. And they get real time display at 7-12 FPS. Very, very impressive....

They are using a pretty modest Nvidia card ($250-$300 range/240 GPU cores.). The thing should fly if you hook it to one of the Nvidia Tesla systems (960 cores!).

It certianly changes our future planning for rendering farms. Right now we're using a farm with 8-10 computers each with 2-4 cores for around 20-30 buckets. 2200x1238 exteriors with an HRDI sky and sun setup on a high poly count rendering with plenty of reflections run 7-15 min. 2200x1238 Interiors with 40-50 IES lights run 20-30 min. Our worse case scenario is a casino with 2000 slot machines all as light sources and 200 other IES lights - 4 hr. (Ya - I like to do silly stuff like that.)

If the extrapolation from the demo is close to real world - then a single Tesla rendering farm would be doing the exteriors in 10 sec. And the interiors in 20 sec. That's a game changer if the number hold up on the final release. Even our "way too many lights" renderings would drop to 3 min!

Imagine if that could run on a farm. You could walk through a fully rendered building with full complexity at 30fps. Whew!

HOLY MOTHER OF $%# !!! I WANT IT!

The CPU version is available now and runs on a farm. Of course the GPU will be faster.

This is an awesome demo, and I WANT this on my computer. Realtime feedback of materials and lighting will be invaluable.
