Default Working with many big xrefs

I have a drawing from an outside source that has about twenty xrefs. The xrefs range from 500k to 17.5 Mb, for a total of 90 Mb. My computer can't handle it; it keeps running out of memory. I've purged and audited all the drawings and unloaded the xrefs. When I go to reload them, ACAD crashes. Any suggestions? TIA

Any way you can just reload the xrefs you need?
Or maybe you can have your own "copy" of those bases, and delete all the extra stuff that's bogging them down?

I need all the xrefs. They all make up a large site plan.

If you have Map3D, you could investigate querying in only the information you need from the Xrefs into your working drawings, by layer, property, or location. Since it's site work, I would expect everything to be on a consistent coordinate system, but if not, Map could also handle the transfoms during the queries.

You may have to set INDEXCTL to have Spacial- and / or Layer Indexing saved for each of the XRefs. If Spacial then only entities inside clipped xrefs are loaded to RAM. If Layer only thawed layers are loaded.

Then in the combining drawing turn on Demand Loading (Tools --> Options --> Open and Save tab, Demand load Xrefs {mid right} - turn Enabled or Enabled with Copy).

But definitely also clean up the drawings you're xreffing in: Purge, -Purge RegApps, -ScaleListEdit, and Audit.

90 MB is average or light for me of all involved.

I have had recent issues which "-purge" helped me with on xrefs on dwgs which once resided up in 2009 and 2010. It was crashing 2008 and down because of left over registered apps. Maybe that could help ??

The XREFCTL command is in the ball park and will help you see where the problem files are.

What verision are you working in ?
