    Default Toon Renderer?

Anyone successfully using a toon type renderer as part of their workflow? We need to transition out of the world of SketchUp and use Max for it's better control of animations and render farm support. However, early design phases of a project usually need a more "sketchy" feel to the images.

I've very briefly tried Final Toon, however it seemed to choke on large complex site model files...

For still images, I think we can come up with a decent hybrid 2D/3D technique, however, for animations, I'd like to get as close as possible with the renderer, vs. doing a huge amount of post work.

    Thanks for any suggestions.

    Hello!

You can use the ink and paint shader or Mentalray with contour....

V-Ray has a pretty nice toon render effect and works well inanimation. It will stylize your maps a little and add a nice outline that has some control options. I'll see if I can dig up some examples...

Nice to see a local face on here.

yeah...i love VRays toon render effect. Especially because you can still use all the GI capabilities with it as well.

    Michael,

Thanks for the link, but I get this "In order to view Siggraph® 2009 Masterclasses, you must be registered for this event and logged-in."

Hopefully these master classes will be moved to a public accessible location, or maybe for subscription members?

I'll see what I can track down.

Here's a still example of the VRay Toon:

We are goin for a more illustrative render style and away form realism, but it still has the nice shading effects. Like Dwane mentioned, it supports GI and is run through the Environment>Atmosphere Effects panel.

Beautiful image! Nice work. Like that fact that it moves away from realism, but still has some subtle shading effects - it gives the image a richness that goes far beyond the sameness of sketchup style "rendering".

    Thanks for sharing.
