Default 2 duct layout generation questions

I'm trying to get a hang of how to automatically generate duct layouts in Revit MEP 2010. I have attached a simple project (which just consists of 2 diffusers, a VAV box, and an AHU) on which I'm trying to figure it out. I can create a supply system by selecting either of the diffusers or the VAV box, create supply system button, edit system, add equipment, and select the VAV. Then when I go to generate the duct layout it lays it all out for me in 3D. Sweet! One problem though: it connects the diffusers to the inlet of the VAV. That's question #1.

Question #2: If I try to add the AHU to the system, it give the error "Cannot add 05 to System. There is no available connector matching the System Type (Supply Air) for the System.", and in fact, if I attempt to create a system with the AHU, supply air is not an option, although editing the (OOTB) family reveals that there is in fact a supply air connector on the unit. Any idea why this is?

    Thanks!

Systems should always be created from the "children" and the "parent" should always be assigned as the equipment.

If you create s sytems from the VAV box, the application assumes that the VAV is a child of the system. The only logical parent in this case is the AHU.

You can't create a system from the AHU since the supply connector on the AHU is configured to have the flow going out, Revit knows that this can't be a child, it has to be a parent.

    1. Get rid of all of your existing systems.
    2. Select both air terminals. Create a system from them.
    3. Specify the VAV as the equipment for the system.
    4. Select the VAV. Create a system.
    5. Specify the AHU as the equipment for the system.

My advice would be "don't waste your time with this feature". In theory it's good, but in a real-world model where you have to route your ducts over/under/around steel/pipes/other ducts it just doesn't work. If it could somehow take into consideration other objects around it, then it would be extremely useful, however, I realize to code something like that would probably be a huge undertaking, and most likely many users would not latch onto it because we like to have control of what we design/model/draft.

The system info (parent/child relationships) that Jason pointed out is worth knowing.

    Just my 2 pesos.
