Default Convert model lines to symbolic lines?

    Hello:

I've got a library of ADT multi-view blocks that I want to convert into Revit families. To reduce graphic processing, I'd like the 3D component to display in 3D and elevation only. As I currently understand Revit, for the 2D component to display in plan only, I need to draw it using symbolic lines.

    Here's my workflow so far:

    (1) Import the 3D block component
    (2) Turn off visibility of the imported 3D block in plan/ceiling views
    (3) Import the 2D block component

Am I forced to draw the 2D component using symbolic lines, picking the lines in the imported 2D block, or can I explode the 2D block and convert the model lines into symbolic lines? If so, how do you convert model lines to symbolic lines?

Is there another method that I'm not considering?

    Thanks in advance!

Generally I import and draw over, especially if its going to be part of your 'library'
One thing you havent mentioned in your process is creating a filled region as well so your part hides things below it in plan (ie like floor tiles etc etc)

Have a look at this chair/ deassemble it to see what I mean (I have a filled region called 'plan'

If you explode dwgs you get a bunch of layers that stay in the family and then go into your project so I like to explode in a separate file. If you select the the similar lines by instance then change to a revit line type that will avoid bringing in too many subcategories.

To convert model lines to symbolic lines. You can cut the model lines. Start a filled region. Paste the lines aligned into the filled region. Copy those lines quit the filled region. Click on symbolic lines tool then paste aligned.

Just so you know symbolic lines won't show up in 3D views

If you were using Revit 2010 with the latest service pack installed (available only through Subscription), there's a tool that will do the conversion between model lines and symbolic line (and vice-versa) without having to use this old trick.

Andre - can you tell me where to find the tool that will allow us to make this conversion? I am running 2010 with the latest service pack and I haven't been able to find it.

    Much thanks!

I don't have Revit in front of me right now, but if I'm not wrong, when you select the lines, the Convert Lines tool will show on the ribbon.

    fjacobson-

Andre is correct -- the convert lines tool will appear on the Modify Lines tab after selecting a line. The tool was released as part of build # 20090925_1815. Look for the Subscription Release Pack download.

Andre- apologies for hijacking this thread....but when you use the Convert Lines tool on a chain of lines, are you able to tab-select the chain? It seems that once converted, the ability to select a chain is lost. I posted this question the other day but got no responses....
