Default Copying from an existing layer to a new layer

How does one copy from an existing layer to a new layer, without changing the existing layer.

In AC2008 you can use the copytolayer command.

If earlier ACad, Copy @0. Then type PSELECT and P for previous. Then change the entities to the new layer. PickFirst needs to be set to 1.

Another way is to use "ctrl-c" or to right-click, pick "copy" or "copy with base point", then chose the objects. Then go to the target layer with layer properties manager and paste using "ctrl-v" or right-click and choose one of the 3 "paste" options.

I'm not sure, is this something new? It doesn't work for me like this, the pasted entities are still on their original layers.

Red face Re: Copying from an existing layer to a new layer

OOps, you're right. It doesn't actually change the layers of the objects. Sorry for the confusion.

Only for one object though! If you want to copy several objects at once to a new layer, then bruce's idea is the closest work-around (although it actually "moves" the originals to the new layer and leaves the copies on the old layer).

Unfortunately ACad does not have a multiple-last selection set. It's been in the wish list a few years ago. Or you could use my addon for the "Result" selection set ... see these threads:

True, true but, technically, it does alter the content of the previous layer.
