Default Plotting in PDF (making .shx fonts as text not graphics)

    Hi!

Anybody knows how to configure autocad 2008 to treat the .SHX fonts as "text" and not as "graphics" when plotting in PDF?

Using the plotter configuration editor, you can treat True Type fonts as "text" or "graphics". How about .shx fonts? My goal is to plot drawings (containing .shx fonts) in PDF whose text are content readable.

    Thanks!

IIRC DeskPDF will do that, probably some other pdf creation software as well. Evidently however, not the one you are using.....

    Cadtag,

I tried deskPDF trial version and it doesn't make the .shx fonts "selectable/readable". But, hey, thanks for the input.

I would doubt that any pdf writer could interpret shx output as text. The pdf format was created by Adobe; why would it understand the shx structure?
I'd be pleased to be wrong, though.

If that's the case, how about making the autocad PDF driver substitute true type fonts (the nearest ones) to the shx fonts when creating the output? I've used microstation V8 XM before and this is what it does. Is this possible with Autocad 2008?

I'd have thought that the easy answer would be to redefine you text styles to use ttf fonts.

Unhappy Re: Plotting in PDF (making .shx fonts as text not graphics)

It would probably be the smartest solution, but the CAD standard of the project specified romans.shx and simplex.shx only.

I think most of design engineering firms still used shx fonts instead of ttf fonts. But I can't say the same for the architectural field.

If your client insists on shx fonts AND on searchable text in pdf copies, ask them how.

This thread from CADTutor seems to support my theory.

I think engineering companies use shx fonts because they are efficient but architects use ttf fonts because they are pretty.

Talking Re: Plotting in PDF (making .shx fonts as text not graphics)

Thanks, 'Just read the thread,, this problem of plotting the shx fonts and making them readable, has really been a problem for quite a while... That's a better idea, I'll probably go out and have a drink! =)

there is a romans.ttf included on the autocad distributions. It's apparently hardwired out of the font file selections within Autocad, but you can use if for other windows applications.
