Default how to insert a wall-based sconce onto a column

    Can you change a wall-based family to a face-based?
Or is there any other way I should consider?
    Thanks

Short answer, no. Once a host type is selected it can't be changed.
Your best approach would be to create the family as a FACE BASED family. You can then place it on any workplane or modeled face.

    Thank you

That's what I thought. I figured it's quicker to create a super thin plate (wall) where the sconce is attached to a column so that it wouldn't be visible, though it's kinda cheating.
