Cool Coordinating Revit and CAD Models

    Hi everyone,

I am exploring the interaction of Revit and CAD models. I want to have a better understanding of how to export a Revit model so that it can be used within CAD for project coordination. In the other hand, how to use a CAD model within Revit for project coordination. What are the best practices in both cases?

    Best Regards,

Exporting from Revit to DWG is pretty easy. You will find that exporting the 3D model in "slices" per floor, rather than a monolithic model, will be appreciated by your consultants.

Bringing stuff from CAD into Revit is another thing entirely.

Navisworks is the "great BIM glue" as far as I am concerned for project coordination. Clash detection is far better in Navisworks than Revit, especially if you must coordinate models from different applications.

What about if I am working on a plumbing design within Revit and I want to bring the mechanical design that was model in CAD that way I can make sure I wont have much clashes when everything is put together in Navis. What would be the best way to get this done?

If the cad model is solids you can link to Revit but there is a significant limitation that some Revit view tools - section and elevations- will not cut it. If you crop a 3D view with the scope box it will!

If you insert the same geometry in a family, then insert in the project Revit will section it correctly but it's not a live link. Make sure you insert into the family with origin to origin so when you get an update can be sure it's inserted in the same place. Then just reload the family to see the new model. Best to have these in their own workset so you can avoid loading the model overhead if not needed
