    Default Extrude to irregular surface

    All

Please bear with me, being new to inventor I'm probably missing some thing quite simple.

My problem is that I have one part with a surface made up of a series of irregular curves generated using the loft comand, I now wish to generate a second part to butt up to a section of the first part.

I imported Part A into an assembly file and used "create componant", placed a work plane, sketched the profile of Part B, so far so good, when I extrude this profile using from/to or just to and checking the minimum solution box the resulting solid extends through the first surface to the far side which is flat.

How can I limit the extrusion to end at the first surface.

Any help will be very much appreaciated.

    Regards

    Don Smith

Problem with uploading files, change extension to zipx.

Downloaded your zip file but can't unzip it - maybe it is damaged?
BTW, your file is zip format - not zipx.

Thanks for uploading your drawings again.
And sorry for the late response because I was very busy at work.

    I finally unzip your file.
I tried but realised that there is no way to extrude another part to the curved surface in iam environment.
Alternatively, you can create another block in the wave1.ipt then extrude it to the surface by using "to next", of course.
I think this is the one of missing functions with the inventor. And I believe this is also one of the reasons which people doesn't like inventor.
Maybe some of the inventor giants from the forum can solve your problem.

BTW, your drawing version is v2009 & I am using v2011 which can't save drawings to previous version - another disadvantage of the inventor!

Thanks for your time, I'll try and model it in Auto cad and subtract the lofted solid from a square, hopefully that might do the trick

    Thanks again

This can definitely be done, but you need to use Copy Object at the assembly level to get the surface into the second part. I do this all the time for nesting blocks for fixtures.

Open afin2 inside the assembly for editing

Use the Copy Object tool and use the Face option, click all the top faces of the irregular surface

Finish Edit on the part. Now for clarity, simply open the afin2 part explicitly.

Use the Stitch command to make sure all the surfaces are combined together.

Delete your extrusion because it exists before this new surface and recreate it to terminate it TO the irregular surface.

    See attached for result.

Sculpt can also work in this scenario as well, but I just chose to do it in a similar way that you were wanting. You could use the Sculpt command after the surface is in your second part and remove the material on one side of the surface.
