Repeating Detail in Detail Component

Is there a way to replicate the functionality of repeating details within detail component families (i.e. a string of c-channel sections that flexes with the detail component)?

Yep, use an array in a lined based detail component. If you want a line that "stretches" you will have to create that as a separate line based detail component and imbed (or nest) it in.
