    Default workspace help

Quite often I have to open up some CAD file and PDF it for one of my employers.

the problem is, that it completely messes up cad. currently my quick properties is gone.
qpmode =1 still.. and it is checked off if I r-click something.

what is the best way to protect my workspace from workspace breaking CAD drawings?

now I have to find out how to reset everything, then fix it...

    oh how I hate this.

Options - reset to default - does not fix it.

I plot pdf's all day long and they don't affect my workspace. How are you plotting to pdf? And, when pdf printing screws up your workspace can't you just reset it in the Workspace dropdown and get your UI back to normal? You do save your workspace with a special name for reuse I hope?

it's when I open a DWG file from an unknown source. the actual plotting is fine.

so, you're saying that opening a drawing is changing your workspace and has nothing to do with plotting the drawing? I guess I don't understand what you're problem is as that's not what your OP said. Oh, nice dog though!

hehe sorry i'll recap. I have to plot to pdf files from an unknown source. the problem is not the plotting, that works fine. it's the opening of the files that corrupts / changes global settings.

yeah I love that photo - it is a damn cute puppy.

well, to my knowledge there is nothing in a .dwg file that could control a workspace but obviously something is happening. Any chance of getting a copy of one of these bad boy .dwgs? Oh, and I'm searching for my dog pic to put up this morning

possibly there's a VBA macro attached to the drawing to reset the workspace? if their cad manager is OCD, he may well be trying to impose that level of control on his people.

If you are meaning the system variables are changing,,,, remember that some are stored in the dwg file, although qpmode is listed as a registry entry

Otherwise, are you opening the dwgs from the Acad FileOpen dialog? or double clicking from windows Explorer?

either way, save your preferred workspace to a unique name so you can quickly restore it

Gods I wish I wrote down everything that happened the first time I opened it.. it was rclicking from windows.

I believe I removed what I could from that file and started a new file ( even my default customized template was corrupted somehow ) I realllly don't know what happened. I got rid of the file.

needless to say I was a little freaked out... I started backing things up alot more after that

from the responses so far, I don't think it happens that often.
