2D-3D seperation

Is there a way to move a 2D object independently of it's 3D model? When I layout my receptacles and structured wiring, for it to look good in 2D, they are spaced too far apart in 3D. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm not sure if you are a member of AUonline with access to the course handouts there, but, I recall a good class demonstration of the topic from Bob Bell... let me see if I can find the course number...
