Default Rendering Large still image problem in Maya

I have been trying to render out large 40 to 48 inch x 300 dpi image with no success.

I have Maya 2010 and a MacPro tower computer, 10GB of RAM, OS 10.5.8 and a huge scratch dedicated Sata drive. My Mac Pro uses two 2.8 GHz Quad Core Xenon Processors. I have tried the Maya and Mental Ray software render, and tried to render in psd, or tiff or jpg format with no success. At this point I am trying to merely render a single primitive cube with a texture on it.The light is the Maya default light and the setup is very simple until I learn how to do this. Again: this is a still image. The problem is that beyond about 25 inches at 300 dpi, Maya crashes. I am however able to render out still images less than around 25 inches at 300dpi. Any information regarding this problem and how to solve it would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks in advance

You could also break this down into FG and BG and composite it in Photoshop. That would also give you some flexibility to make changes without having to render everything all over again. You could even leave some things such as the 2D people to be comped in Photoshop entirely.
