Could not establish reference to parent horizontal alignment

While trying to create a reference to a profile back into the drawing which contains the alignments and corridor I keep getting the following error message: "Could not establish reference to parent horizontal alignment". What am I doing wrong that the data references will not work for this. It is a ditch profile that relates to the cl alignment. THis is in 2011 but we also had the same problem in 2010 and the only way we got it to function properly was to put everything in one file there by creating one big monster file that is almost unusable for a smaller project. This project is far too large to have to do the same thing.

The Parent Alignment Object must be in the same file as the Child profile. You cannot data shortcut a profile from a file if the profile in question has a parent alignment that was data shortcut from another file. The alignment and profile must be in the same file.
