Post Component Visibility (Section shows front and back view)

    Hello,
I have this kitchen top that was created as an in place family with a sweep. In the kitchen elevation views or whenever I cut a section right through the middle looking toward one side, the "other side" of the top shows up in the view. How can I only see one side and not front and back?

In my experience, when you cut a family, all of it shows up, even parts you don't want to see, such as you case with the back showing up when you're looking at the front. I would suggest investigating using a detail component or symbolic lines in lieu of the massing. Then simply toggle the visibility of the massing in the visibility settings to not show up in the correspodning views.

In general, the way I have approached families like this is to keep the massing simple - no lips, curves, etc - just planes - and add drafting components/linework with additional detail in the specific elevation, plan and section views so that the components read well. It tends to be easier on the coputations that your machine has to generate, too.

This has something to do with which family template you use when creating your object. For instance, we had similar issues when creating countertops in casework used for food service equipment because we used the "specialty equipment" template. When created with the "casework" template the problem went away.

Sorry I couldn't be more specific but give it a look.

I had not noticed it before. Probably because of the "C" shape of the kitchen, most families I use are smaller "L" or "I" shaped. Modeling everything 3d really bloats the model but I always export everything to Viz to render, so I guess maybe the solution would be to cut the top into 2. Or not use an in place family, but rather some Revit Family which has more options as far as visibility. Thanks for the help bigbleonard.

Hmmm, I thought that maybe the template had something to do with it. I tried a different one but had the same results. I will try the casework template to see what happens. Thanks for the tip.

Edit: Just tried it with a Casework family and it worked! Interesting. I wonder why it would be any other way than how it is only in the Casework family and who knows in what other Family Category. Thanks again!

    Bump this thread.

Anyone know which templates work properly when cutting family in sections.

    TIA

Try the Help file. There is actually a list of which families cut, and which do no. There are some potential "work-arounds" but they can take a little effort and experimentation.
