Default simply trying to draw an outline of a building

I want to draw an overhead view of a building. I started out with DDE and wrote down 25 for 25 inches, thinking it would be 1"=1 foot. It drew that. I went on, trying to show the contours, the shapes of the front of the building as I continued to move across the front, and it gets to where it says I cannot zoom out. I was of the understanding that AutoCad could allow me to zoom out far enough to show a building that is (roughly) 326' wide by 454" long. What do I need to do to make this happen? 2011 is so much more (needlessly) complicated than earlier versions I have used.

Enter the REGEN command, then attempt to zoom again.

    Does this resolve your issue?

...also your "25", could be 25 inches, feet, miles, light years, millimeters, etc. The unit of measure is up to you and/or the original drawing author.

You may want learn Zoom Extents. As stated above use REGEN or REGENALL, this is nothing new it has been like that for awhile.

Make sure the variable REGENAUTO is set to ON; there will still be times when you need to interrupt what you are doing to zoom out but possibly fewer times.
There is no maximum limit to the size of objects you can construct; you could draw the universe if you had the right information.

It sounds as if you are drawing "to scale" - this is not recommended. Draw everything "to size" - this is the norm and not just in AutoCAD.

I was trying to do it in inches, but don't have all the scale down yet, so I went and put the ' mark after the numbers to get it to draw the actual size, and it wouldn't show the line. Yes, that went WAY out of the grid that shows, but so what? Why can't the grid expand, or be expanded to to encompass the size of what I am trying to do and show?
This structure runs 326' one way, and 418' another. Used to be able to do this in an earlier version.

You mention "the grid" which implies that limts are set and that the limits include too small an area to include what you want to draw. Either use the LIMITS command to set a bigger area or set the variable LIMCHECK to zero (= off).

As for scale, you should draw everything at its actual size but you have to choose whether your numbers refer to feet or to inches. The UNITS command allows you to tell autocad which you are using.

ok, will try that. what exactly do I write in the command line to keep limits out of the way, limcheck=0?
