When I export our revit model to dxf, the file size becomes enormous (35Mb Revit file turns into 848Mb dxf file). Is this normal?

Sounds way over the top to me.
I usually export to R2000 dwg and the file sizes seem comparable to Revit and are often less.
Try a dwg export to compare.
I believe that you export what you see so a hidden line plan results in a smaller file, a wireframe 3D view gives a larger file. Even so your files seem oversize as they ought to be only lines and circles and maybe a little text.
Try exporting via a sheet view.
Thanks beegee and PeterJ. I tried exporting the 3D model to dwg and the file size was much smaller. It's still bigger than the revit file, but at least it's manageable.
Thanks again
