    Unhappy layers in viewports

I am having trouble keeping layers turned off in viewports. When the layers are from xrefs, everytime I open the dwg file, the layers in the viewports which come from xrefs are back on. I am trying to turn off ceilings in an architectural background xref. I can turn off the layers in the viewport each time to plot out my sheets, but everytime I re-open the file there they are, turned back on. Is there someway to keep these thing form coming back on? I don't want to generically freeze or turn of the layers, because I want them on in other viewports.

Any help would REALLLLLLYYY be appreciated

Check what VISRETAIN is set to.

VISRETAIN 0 discards any changes to XREF or VP changes.

VISRETAIN 1 retains them for use the next time the host drawing is edited.
