    Default Grip Editing Parcels

I haven't used parcels in the past, but decided to use them on one project to allow easier labeling of property owners, parcel numbers, and property lines for the existing properties along my project. After a learning curve, I got everything worked out.

Recently, I received updated property lines after detailed title searches, and went in to update the parcels by grip editting the old parcels to the new lines. I've decided that it is a pain in the rear end.

I've discovered several problems in doing this, which makes a lot of extra grip editing. For example, if I move a corner grip far enough so that the label goes outside of the revised parcel, it deletes the label and all of its associated data (property owners, deed numbers, and parcel numbers) and assigns it a new parcel number. It also does the same thing if I move grips in such a way that it creates parcels where parcel segments temporarily overlap. Also, it will do the same if I have to add a curve segment into the parcel.

Is there a setting or command that forces Civil to fix the data to the parcel and will not allow it to delete the data and assign a new parcel number?

Yes, I have found a way around it by moving my grips a lot more smaller increments, but why should I have to double or triple (or more) the number of times I move a grip? I figure this would be a big thing for those who use parcels regularly.

This is probably my biggest gripe about parcels. No, there is no setting to control the new Parcel creation. At one time I had the keen idea to LandXML out the parcels before editing so at least the data would be saved. However, the UDP's are not exported to the XML file.

    Thanks anyway Jeff.

I had problems with the User Defined Properties anyway. When I tried to label the parcels in an Xref drawing, the UDP wouldn't show up in the labels. I got tired of fighting that one, so just stopped using them. What was I doing wrong there?

    Are your labels "Pinned" ?

Not sure if that would help or not, however it might be worth investigating.

    Talking Re: Grip Editing Parcels

Did you just hear that thump? That's just me giving myself a dope slap.

Yes, pinning labels works. I completely forgot about that feature for labels.

I don't suppose there is a way to change my style to automatically pin the label after I drag it from its default position to its final position? Or do I have to pin each one of them separately?

    Thanks for the tip!

    Unhappy Re: Grip Editing Parcels

Well, I had to apologize for giving myself a dope slap.

While pinning the labels did help for a related issue on the plan and profile sheets with the labels moving whenever I grip editted a parcel corner, it DID NOT fix the problem of then I grip editted the parcel farther than its label. It still deletes the parcel properties and assigns it a new parcel number.

    So, any other ideas?

Just like college girls, they will all need to be pinned one by one.

    Happy to help.

This would suggest that you, first reset the label (return it to the center of the parcel)
Then your dragging of the lines should NOT cross the limit of where it decides to create new parcels.
Perhaps even using a simple TAG style only.

    Gentlemen,

Thanks for your comments. I'll keep thinking about a workaround and will post back if I come up with something.
